Brothers, We Gotta Do Better

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Late Monday night, May 5th, what started as a simpleargument inside the Black Raiders Motorcycle Club in Orange Mound turned intochaos when one man pulled a gun and started shooting. The reason why he pulledis not know. Eight people were hit. Seven with confirmed injured. All victims wereconnected to the life.

Yellow tape and law enforcement outside the Black Raiders MC clubhouse on Carnes Avenue right after the shooting. This is what the set looks like when one man loses his temper and says to hell with consequences and lets loose.

According to Memphis Police, the shooting went down around 11:30 p.m. at the clubhouse on Carnes Avenue. It started with two brothers getting into an altercation. Words turned hot and shots rang out, according to a bystander. Four men were dropped at the scene. A short time later, four more — two men and two women — showed up at local hospitals with gunshot wounds. One man was grazed in the face but refused treatment. Others took rounds to the leg, neck, arm, and head. Thankfully, all were listed in non-critical condition and most have already been released.

Wider view of the scene that night — police and tactical units locking the block down while the neighborhood watches. This is the kind of heat the whole set feels when drama pops off inside the clubhouse.

This wasn’t the first time that night, that this type of violence happened. Orange Mound saw three separate shootings in less than 24 hours. One man killed, another seriously hurt just blocks away. It is unknown if these incidents are related.

Carnes Avenue in Orange Mound during the day — the same street where the Black Raiders MC sits. Peaceful now, but the community is tired of nights like this.

My take on things—Real Talk from the Road

These brothers with the Black Raiders MC, they’re out here living the life just like the rest of us — working, riding, holding it down for their families. Now eight of them (and their families) are dealing with hospital bills, pain, and heat from the police because one man couldn’t control his temper. That’s not strength. That’s weakness with a gun. How about going heads up, with fists instead of bullets?

We’ve seen what unity looks like. We’ve seen clubs put egos down and throw successful parties with no drama. That same energy needs to show up when the temperature rises. Leadership has to step in before the guns come out.

To every brother and sister riding under a patch in Memphis and beyond: watch you’re six, keep your cool, and think before you reach. The road is hard enough without us adding to the body count. Our families deserve better. Our clubs deserve better. The culture deserves better.

If you got information on what happened at the Black Raiders, do what you gotta do. But more than that — lets start holding each other to a higher standard before the next story like this drops.

Stay solid out there.

Ride loyal.

Think twice.
