Motorcyclist Charged with Assault of Passenger Because of DUI

PARAMUS, NJ – A woman was seriously injured after being thrown from a motorcycle when the driver lost control Sunday night at the entrance of Van Saun Park, police said.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office announced the arrest of Alex Cruz, 33, of Suffern, NY, and charged him with “third-degree assault by auto resulting in serious bodily injury while in violation of driving while intoxicated.” He was issued multiple motor vehicle summonses, as well, including driving while intoxicated.

On Sunday, August 6, at approximately 7:52 p.m., the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department received a 9-1-1 call reporting a motor vehicle accident involving a motorcycle in the area of the Forest Avenue entrance to Van Saun Park.

Officers found a single-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle operated by Cruz who had lost control, police said, causing a female passenger and Cruz to be ejected from the motorcycle. The female passenger was transported to Hackensack University Hospital “for treatment of serious bodily injuries,” police said.

Cruz was suspected of operating his motorcycle while under the influence of alcohol and was subsequently placed under arrest at the scene, police said.

Cruz was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending his first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.
