Atlantic Beach officials attempt to shut down ‘mass casualties’ rumor during bikefest

The small town of Atlantic Beach welcomes thousands of Black bikers from across the east coast during the Black Pearl Cultural Heritage and Bike Festival, commonly referred to as Black Bike Week. The celebration centers around the town’s main street, Atlantic Street, and kicked off Friday, May 23, 2025.

Atlantic Beach officials on Sunday, May 25, attempted to shut down rumors circulating social media about an incident with mass casualties on Saturday night.

The town released a statement Sunday, saying there were no mass casualties and after a brief pause Saturday, the event continued until it ending at 3 a.m.

“There were a couple of fights that broke out causing panic in the crowd and several people were injured trying to leave the area,” the town said in a statement.

Police and medical staff rendered aid and some people were transported to the hospital, though the town said it is unsure the number of people transported.

“We sincerely regret that anyone was injured, but we also regret the unfactual information that is being falsely spread about the Atlantic Beach Black Pearl Cultural Heritage and Bike Festival. We ask that those who are spreading false reports to correct the record,” the town said.

The town’s bikefest continues through Monday, which is also Memorial Day.

Bikefest celebrates 45 years this year in Atlantic Beach. More commonly known as Black Bike Week, the event dates back to its early editions in the 1980s and features parties, live music, entertainment and meet-and-greets throughout the weekend.
